TIRANA Indians Satchel Paige Jersey , April 24 (Xinhua) -- Kole Drini, 61, was killed by a sniper Wednesday in Shkoder, north of Albania, local media reported on Thursday.
According to preliminary investigation, it was a revenge killing based on blood feud.
Kole was shot dead on the spot about 50 meters from house, while working on the land together with his wife. The sniper shot twice with silencer, first bullet in the chest of Kole and the other in the head.
The perpetrator then moved to a black car without license plates.
Police of Shkoder are investigating for the motive of this crime and identifying the killer.
According to the police, the shooting came precisely from more than 120 meters away, so that Kole was believed to be shot by a sniper.
Eight people were taken under police custody, suspected of being connected or having information about the case.
Investigation group suspects that the motive is a blood feud, since the brother of the victim has killed another man 17 years ago for banal reasons, but was never convicted a crime.
In Albania, blood feud exists in some rural areas. More than 5,500 Albanian families are currently engaged in blood feuds. There are now more than 20,000 men and boys who live under an ever-present death sentence because of blood feuds. Since 1992, at least 10,000 Albanians have been killed due to blood feuds.
There is an aspect to such feuds that make them unique - namely, that both sides in the feud claim to be acting entirely within the "law" -- the Kanun, a 500-year-old code of conduct covering medieval life, from births and marriages to hunting and grazing rights.
And amid its edicts on the duties of a village blacksmith, and the penalties for allowing a goat to stray onto a neighbor's land, it lays out detailed procedures for blood feuds, with a chillingly loose definition of an eye-for-an-eye. When someone is killed, revenge can be exacted not just against the killer himself, but all males in his extended clan.
